Frank Portelli: Farewell to a Gentleman, a Politician and a Pioneer in Healthcare

I have just received the sad news that Frank Portelli has died today. For me, his passing means losing a personal friend I often met at Godfrey Grima’s place and, on other occasions, over the years.

Frank was a politician and a gentleman. He was also a pioneer in private healthcare in Malta, and his work through St Philip’s Hospital remains an important part of his legacy. His life brought together medicine, public service and political commitment.

His political journey was not without difficulties. Despite his commitment to the Nationalist Party, he faced tough times even within its ranks. My own recollection of those years is of a man whose contribution deserved recognition, even from those who disagreed with him.

Today, however, I remember above all the friend. Our meetings at Godfrey’s and elsewhere gave me opportunities to know Frank beyond his public role. It is that personal acquaintance, and the gentleman I knew, that I shall remember with affection.

His passing leaves sadness among those who knew him and valued his friendship. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones at this painful moment.

Rest in peace, Frank.
