THE LIBERAL ELITE’S SELF-CONGRATULATORY SPIRAL: A MODERN FASCISM IN DISGUISE

by Maltese Canadian
In the grand theatre of Western politics, a curious spectacle unfolds: liberals, cloaked in the garb of moral superiority, shower each other with accolades, prizes, and glowing editorials. From glittering award ceremonies to the hallowed pages of progressive broadsheets, they pat each other on the back with a fervour that betrays not confidence, but insecurity, a gnawing fear that history might one day judge them harshly. Yet, in a twist of bitter irony, these self-proclaimed champions of democracy wield an authoritarian hammer against their ideological foes, demanding prison sentences for figures like Marine Le Pen, Donald Trump, and Matteo Salvini. Eighty years after the fall of fascism, it seems the liberals have dusted off its playbook, using it not to unite, but to silence dissent. This is not progress. It is a disgrace, a danger, and a chilling echo of the horrors of the last century.
The liberal establishment’s obsession with self-congratulation is no mere vanity project. It stems from a deep-seated dread of being found wanting. They award each other medals and endless column inches, as if these baubles could cement their legacy before the ink of history dries. Consider the rapturous praise heaped upon figures like Barack Obama or Greta Thunberg. They are lauded not just for their deeds, but as symbols of a virtuous West that liberals desperately wish to believe still exists. This mutual admiration society is less about achievement and more about fear: fear that their policies (open borders, climate dogma, and identity politics) might one day be seen as the hollow gestures of a decaying civilisation.

Yet, while they garland themselves with honours, they turn a vengeful eye towards the right. Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s National Rally, faces relentless legal battles, with a jail suspended sentence her for politically motivated financial irregularities. Across the Atlantic, Donald Trump has battled a litany of lawsuits and indictments, with liberal commentators openly salivating at the prospect of his imprisonment. In Italy, Matteo Salvini, the firebrand interior minister, has been hounded by courts for blocking migrant boats, in defending national sovereignty. The pattern is clear: dissent from the liberal orthodoxy is not just opposed, it is criminalised.
This is where the spectre of fascism rears its head. Eight decades ago, authoritarian regimes crushed opposition through censorship, imprisonment, and propaganda. Today, liberals deploy eerily similar tactics under the guise of protecting democracy. They brand their rivals as “far-right extremists,” a label that conveniently justifies any measure, legal or otherwise, to shut them down. The irony is grotesque: in their crusade against imagined tyrants, they have become the very thing they claim to despise. History, it seems, is not a lesson learned but a cycle repeated.
The consequences are dire. By stifling debate and jailing their foes, liberals alienate millions, fuelling the very populism they fear. The West crumbles with its institutions hollowed out, its people divided. Instead of leading with vision, liberals cling to power through coercion. They are no longer exemplars of freedom but enemies of the people they purport to serve. If this continues, the horrors of the 20th century, including division, oppression, and conflict, will not remain confined to history books. The liberal elite must look in the mirror before it’s too late. Their insecurity may yet be their undoing. And ours.

The left is a new version of fascism. They are the true fascists and not the far right.
