Maltese Software Entrepreneur Donates €50,000 to Germany’s Hard-Right AfD

The German political-transparency organisation abgeordnetenwatch has reported that Nicholas “Nick” Galea, a Maltese software entrepreneur now based in Cyprus, donated €50,000 to Germany’s hard-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).

Galea founded GFI Software and has been involved in establishing several other technology companies, including Acunetix, 2X and 3CX. After building and selling software businesses in Malta, he moved to Cyprus. He is currently identified as the founder and chief executive officer of 3CX.

Research undertaken by this site confirms that a €50,000 donation from Nicholas Galea of Nicosia was received by the AfD on 16 September 2026. The donation was reported to the German authorities the following day and appears in the German Bundestag’s official register of large political donations.

Galea has also been identified as the donor of €15,000 to the Dutch right-wing party Forum voor Democratie in 2019.

Some reports have described Galea as a billionaire. However, no reliable publicly available evidence confirming his personal wealth at that level has been found. It would therefore be more accurate to describe him as a wealthy Maltese software entrepreneur or multimillionaire.

The latest disclosure nevertheless confirms that a Maltese-born businessman was behind one of the AfD’s officially registered large donations.
