Italian Journalist Rampini Explains Why Malta’s Recognition of Palestine Is a Disservice to the Palestinian People

Malta is among the countries that have pledged to recognise Palestine as a fully sovereign state. In the video below, Italian journalist Federico Rampini, based in New York, explains the risks such recognition entails. While he refers primarily to pro-Palestinian protests in Europe, his argument also applies to the recent decisions of several European states to recognise Palestine. Rampini makes it clear that he is not opposing the Palestinian people themselves, but rather draws a crucial distinction between the Palestinian cause and Hamas. In reality, Hamas is actively undermining the aspirations of the Palestinian people, pursuing instead the destruction of Israel. Recognition of Palestine under present circumstances, therefore, risks legitimising Hamas, an organisation widely designated as terrorist, rather than advancing peace. Rampini warns that any measure which indirectly strengthens Hamas is not only politically reckless but also dangerous. His analysis, grounded in verifiable facts rather than rhetoric, highlights the grave consequences of conferring diplomatic legitimacy in the current context.
