Fearne has lied to the public about the fourth dose

Blog post by Marica Micallef

This site has asked the local health authorities to give a clear message about the fourth dose and whether it will be rolled out to the Maltese nation.[1][2] It even questioned whether it was postponed for post-election, so not to scare the anti-vaxxers.[3]

In fact, LovinMalta[4] has now published the news that:

As of this week, elderly residents in care homes and immunosuppressed individuals are eligible for their second COVID-19 vaccine booster shot, Minister for Health Chris Fearne announced. Individuals over the age of 80 will also be eligible for the booster on 18th April. This will be on a voluntary basis and will not have an impact on the validity of COVID-19 vaccine certificates. Fearne’s announcement came shortly after the European Commission announced that it is safe for people within those demographics to receive a fourth vaccine dose.

European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides announced on Twitter that a second booster dose may also be considered for people between the ages of 60 and 80 if they are considered high risk.

Kyriakides also announced that there is no current data indicating a need for a second booster for those under the age of 60.

This shows that Dr Fearne has once again lied to the public because in another statement before the election, he had stated that:

“Addressing the question on TV show ‘Topik’, Fearne stated that the Health Authorities do not see the need for a fourth vaccine at this stage, “certainly [not] until next autumn.”[5] So, Dr Fearne has already moved the roll-out of this fourth dose by two seasons and six months!  I would also like to remind the public that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) had stated that EMA has recommended that boosters should be tied to the cold season with longer intervals.[6]  But now we are not in the cold season, so what happened to all these pathological lies which are purposely told to trap the public?

I would also like to remind the public that just three months ago, exactly in January, Talk.mt published a very short and sweet article entitled “Iċ-ċans li tingħata r-raba’ doża huwa remot ħafna”[7] (The likelihood that the fourth dose would be administered is very remote) which reads:

“Skont il-Ministeru għas-Saħħa, li f’Malta jkun hawn ‘il bżonn li tingħata r-raba’ doża huwa remot ħafna. Dan ħareġ wara li f’Iżrael se tkun qed tibda tingħata r-raba’ doża lil dawk li se tkun qed tiskadilhom it-tielet doża.

Il-Ministeru għas-Saħħa qal li d-doża tal-booster, jiġifieri it-tielet doża li qiegħda tingħata lill-pubbliku għalissa hija biżejjed.[8]

["According to the Ministry for Health, the need for a fourth dose in Malta is very remote. This came after the fourth dose was being given in Israel to those whose third dose was expiring.

The Ministry of Health said that the booster dose, that is the third dose being given to the public for the time being, is sufficient.”]

It is also of no coincidence that the local roll-out of the fourth dose has coincided with what in the UK, is being called the “spring jab”. As from the 21st of March, eligible Brits, that is those aged 75 and over and those who are immunocompromised over the age of 12, could start booking for the fourth jab, according to The Mirror.[9]

Health Secretary Sajid Javid also gave the strongest hint yet that there will definitely be a wider rollout, giving  “the biggest hint of a second booster rollout for all over-50s this Autumn – as it emerged the NHS is planning to top-up care and NHS staff and the clinically vulnerable too.”[10]

Considering that “Kyriakides announced on Twitter that a second booster dose may also be considered for people between the ages of 60 and 80and that in UK, people aged 75 and over are already being administered the fourth dose, I suspect that the fourth dose would also be extended locally to other cohorts and other ages in the coming months.

Considering Dr Fearne’s lack of consistency and honesty during the whole Covid-19, I now doubt whether Dr Fearne will inform the nation about this now.
