Donna Debono Accuses Melvin Theuma of Telling Only Half the Truth
Following Melvin Theuma’s interview with Times of Malta, Donna Debono—the mother of George Degiorgio’s children—publicly accused Theuma of lying and of revealing only part of the truth.
George Degiorgio is one of the men convicted of assassinating Daphne Caruana Galizia. Debono’s comments are therefore significant, particularly because they contain serious allegations concerning Theuma’s activities and the extent of what he disclosed in court.
Writing informally in Maltese on Facebook, Debono addressed Theuma directly:
“Leave us alone, Melvin! Now you are sorry, but in court you did not answer a damn thing when you were asked whether you had sold drugs to Yorgen! If you are genuinely sorry, are you prepared to pay for your actions, and not merely protect yourself to safeguard the presidential pardon they saw fit to grant you?
“You cannot claim that Yorgen Fenech dragged you by the hair and forced you to kill her. Yet you say nothing about money—your god—or clandestine gambling and money laundering. Did Yorgen involve you in those activities too? I would never have granted you a pardon and then returned your ill-gotten possessions.”
“Tell the whole truth, not merely half of it. The greatest mistake you made was giving this interview, because you have further convinced me that you are telling only half the truth.
“You deceived everyone. You, criminals, are all the same: you appear on television and then continue operating covertly.”
Matthew Caruana Galizia subsequently drew attention to the identity of the person behind the profile. He stated that it belonged to Donna Debono and described her as the mother of George Degiorgio’s children. He also alleged that her family was working “hand-in-hand” with Yorgen Fenech and his lawyers.
Yet his response did not address the substance of Debono’s allegations against Theuma.
These accusations should neither be accepted automatically nor dismissed merely because of the identity of the person making them. They raise questions that deserve clear answers. Was Theuma ever questioned about allegedly selling drugs to Yorgen Fenech? Were any allegations involving drug dealing, illegal gambling, usury or money laundering investigated? What offences were covered by his presidential pardon? What happened to the proceeds allegedly generated through his other activities?
Another important aspect should not be overlooked. During the murder trial, Theuma testified that he had remained in regular contact with Matthew and Paul Caruana Galizia and that they had attempted to reassure him. This does not, by itself, establish any improper relationship. It does, however, make it legitimate to ask whether such continuing contact might affect how Theuma and his testimony are publicly presented.
The European institutions defending the Caruana Galizia family and calling for justice in this case should also support complete transparency concerning the prosecution’s principal witness. Supporting justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia cannot mean shielding any witness from legitimate scrutiny.
Debono has accused Theuma of telling only half the truth. Whether her allegations are true is a matter for the competent authorities to determine. What is unacceptable is ignoring serious allegations of this nature simply because they complicate the preferred public narrative.
Justice cannot be selective. If the whole truth is genuinely the objective, every relevant allegation must be examined—irrespective of whom it implicates or inconveniences.
