MALTESE ABROAD DESERVE A VOICE IN GENERAL ELECTIONS

Thousands of Maltese citizens live and work across the globe. Yet when a general election is called, they face a stark choice. They must fly home to Malta to cast their vote. Or they must stay silent. This outdated rule no longer fits a modern democracy.
Both our major parties have long ignored this problem. Maltese living overseas must return physically on election day. The cost of flights and time off work is high. Many simply cannot afford it. Others cannot leave their jobs or families. The result is clear. Large numbers of patriotic Maltese are shut out of choosing their government.
This situation shames Malta. Electronic voting and secure postal ballots are used successfully in many countries. Secure procedures exist. Technology allows safe remote voting. Yet Malta clings to an old system. It belongs to a time before the internet. Leaving citizens abroad without a practical vote feels more like tribal control than a united nation under one flag.
Why do both parties refuse change? Some suspect self-interest. Maltese overseas often hold more independent views. They live in open societies. They may question the status quo. Perhaps the parties fear votes they cannot easily influence. Others suggest simple neglect. Overseas Maltese lack a loud local lobby. They do not fill seats in Maltese churches or clubs. Their voices carry less weight in village politics.
Whatever the reason, the exclusion is a disgrace. It weakens democracy. It tells ambitious young Maltese that leaving the island means losing your say. A loving nation would embrace its diaspora. It would welcome their ideas and continued connection to the homeland.
Labour and the Nationalists must act now. They should open future general elections to all Maltese citizens worldwide. Allow voting by secure mail or online under the strictest safeguards. This reform is simple. It is fair. It is long overdue.
The two parties owe Malta’s overseas community more than silence. They must show real leadership. Grant the diaspora its rightful voice. Unite all Maltese under the flag, at home and abroad, before another election leaves thousands of loyal citizens stranded and voiceless.
