Why have I decided to candidate myself for these MEPs elections? Because I value the concepts of integrity and democracy in politics

Radu Gheorghe

Why should we associate “integrity” with “democracy”? Democracy is today a system that is being continuously tested. Democracy comes from the Greek word “demos”, which initially meant “common people”. However, with time, this group of ordinary people hijacked the system and became the elite. They were unwilling to bother about integrity. They were not interested in the common good.

Democracy became a clique of people for whom the words ‘common’ or ‘ordinary’ no longer fit. The word “DEMOS” is today associated with a group of people with specific interests, and such an interest is lobby-based. In other words, demos no longer represent all the people but stand for particular groups of individuals.

Life, freedom, liberty, and rights are all related to the same system we subscribe to. It is a system that depends on integrity and education. Education permits people to move up the social ladder. Education is the crux behind the success of a community, a country, a state, or a family. It is the core of a healthier, happier and wealthier society. At the core of all levels, administrative, judicial, and legislative, virtue remains the essential element of “integrity”.

Is “INTEGRITY” a fundamental concept in Malta today? I doubt it. This is why I have decided to become a candidate for this EU election. General elections, local council elections, and European elections are all done to pursue the rule of law. People are asked to engage in this process to keep their lives on the right track.

Elections are presented as policies promoting better lives, individual freedoms, and rights. Elections are meant to be an expression of personal responsibility. They are thought to remove, adjust or change policies that harm us.

On the other hand, the origin of the word “cracy” is to be found in the Latin word “cratia”, meaning “power”. By this word, the Romans expressed the concept of rule, might, sway and authority. Based on these very well-defined meanings, our lifestyle is supposed to be modelled by our politicians. However, success depends on how much “integrity” our politicians invest in our lifestyles.

When the “common” people truly control democracy, democracy is guided by the principles of integrity. However, when democracy is in the hands of the “uncommon” people, it becomes a “mob rule”.

In a democracy, the voting power of the majority overrules the rights of the minority. If a man were on trial for not believing in God and 51 per cent of the people in the courtroom were to vote that he should be hung, that man would be hung for not believing in God. Is this not what is happening today with gender issues? We have substituted God with a new religion called diversity, inclusiveness and integration.

Another good example is from the history of Ancient Greece. Socrates was condemned to death by a majority vote. People were concerned because some of his ideas were considered toxic for the youth of Athens. However, when Socrates learnt that the majority was against him, he refused to escape and leave Athens. He wanted to uphold the principle of the majority rule at the expense of his life.

Socrates declared that his fellow people were wrong in their decisions. Yet they had the right to vote to kill him. This is an excellent example of the fortitude of the victim to uphold the majority principle. It is also a perfect example of the nature of democracy. Democracy is a political system that has the power to kill people. This happens when the government hijack democracy and starts to push a mob rule. There was a mob rule behind the youths of Athens as there was a mob rule behind the decision that Jesus Christ should be condemned to the cross.

A constitutional republic was invented to protect the individual rights of man. This means that the minority is protected from a majority vote so that there will be no repetition of Socrates or Jesus Christ’s stories. The individual rights of men are not subject to majority vote or government legislation. Socrates’s life would have been protected under a Constitutional Republic. Such a constitution would have valued what came to be known as an individual’s natural rights. Today, natural rights have been replaced by mob rule. The European Union is financing all this travesty of democracy.

One should know that when mob rule takes over, it creates a fake democracy. The problem here is that this phoney democracy is created with the tacit agreement of the ordinary people. Without knowing, they agree to have their rights replaced with the concept of privileges.

When this happens, the ruling power is only interested in their egos, interests, and desires. This is why political integrity cannot survive in a society with a high illiteracy rate. Illiteracy leads to irresponsibility in politics. This is why people must vote for the right candidates.

This is why when integrity is absent in democracy, democracy becomes one of the most debatable forms of government. It will become a system geared to enslave people in the name of the rule of law. The result is that the West is turning democracy into Communism. It is the type of Communism that I have personally experienced in Romania under Ceausescu. Under Ceausescu, the Romanians were told that they were living in an equal and inclusive society. We also had the privilege to vote. However, our votes did not matter because the voting system was rigged and controlled. The worst thing was that the Romanians were misguided, misled and fooled. The system lied to them. Ceausescu sought to brainwash the people with the instruments of mob rule. The people feared to stand for their rights.

The truth is that a privilege is not a natural right and, therefore, can be taken away by the government when one disagrees with what the people are saying. This is what used to happen in Romania under Ceausescu. This is where the EU is leading us today. The EU often speaks about tacit agreement or consent. This is being done to hijack democracy in the name of mob rule.

Of great concern is that in our democracy, the majority delegates their power to a number of chosen representatives. This is why one must intelligently decide who will represent the ordinary people in Europe. It is not wise in the circumstances that one abstain from voting. Therefore, one must choose the correct candidate for the EU parliament. The choice should be for candidates who will not agree to approve vicious legislation.

If the small body of the chosen MEPs has no “integrity”, are unguided and have unlimited and restrictive principles, these MEPs will lead democracy to a modern form of tyranny. Then, these representatives will violate our rights in the name of the majority and inclusion.

Let us not allow our representatives in June to establish a new form of political tyranny. This is why I have decided to be an independent candidate in the June elections. This is why the electorate has to vote for all the independent candidates.

  1. The author’s comment resonates with me: “The result is that the West is turning democracy into Communism. It is the type of Communism that I have personally experienced in Romania under Ceausescu. Under Ceausescu, the Romanians were told that they were living in an equal and inclusive society.” It takes the suffering of those who lived in dangerous times to open the eyes of my generation. We feel lost but we can’t pin down exactly where the problem is. Many of us only know the present with all its fake gloss. We owe it to the author for alerting us that he was there and tasted first-hand the cruelty of the problem and its bitter roots.
