Wanted Since 2023, Albanian Woman Arrested After Flying from Malta to Catania

A 25-year-old Albanian woman, wanted by the Italian judicial authorities since November 2023 in connection with several serious alleged offences, has been arrested immediately after arriving in Catania on a flight from Malta.

The arrest has received extensive coverage in the Italian media. Yet the detail that should be of particular interest to us in Malta is precisely where her journey began.

According to reports published by ANSA⁠, La Sicilia⁠ and several other Italian news outlets, the woman was travelling on a direct flight from Malta to Catania’s Vincenzo Bellini International Airport.

Italian Border Police reportedly identified her name while checking the passenger lists of incoming flights. Officers were waiting on the tarmac when the aircraft arrived. As soon as the passengers began disembarking, they approached the aircraft steps, identified the woman and detained her before she could enter the terminal.

She was then taken to the Border Police offices, where she was formally notified of the arrest warrant. After the necessary procedures had been completed, she was transferred to prison and placed at the disposal of the Italian judicial authorities.

Wanted since November 2023

The precautionary detention order was issued by the judge responsible for preliminary investigations at the Court of Bologna in November 2023. Italian reports state that the allegations include kidnapping for the purpose of extortion, extortion and facilitating illegal immigration for profit.

These are extremely serious allegations. The fact that the woman had apparently remained wanted for nearly three years makes her arrival from Malta especially worthy of attention.

However, the information released so far does not explain her connection with our country.

Was she residing in Malta, or was she merely passing through the island? How long had she been here? Did she possess Maltese residence documentation? Was Malta her habitual base, or had she arrived shortly before travelling to Sicily? Were the Maltese authorities aware that a person subject to an Italian detention order might have been present on the island?

Most importantly, was her name included in the European databases available to the Maltese authorities?

These are legitimate questions. They do not imply that she committed any offence in Malta or that the alleged criminal activity under investigation in Bologna had a Maltese connection. No such link has been established in the information published by the Italian authorities. Nevertheless, her departure from Malta cannot simply be treated as an incidental detail.

Italian police were waiting at the aircraft

The manner in which the arrest was conducted is itself significant. The Italian officers did not encounter the woman accidentally during a routine check inside the terminal. They had reportedly identified her through checks on the names of arriving passengers and were waiting beside the aircraft when it reached its assigned position.

The operation was conducted quickly and discreetly, apparently to prevent the woman from becoming aware of the police presence or attracting unnecessary attention among the other passengers.

Italian newspapers have treated this as an important police operation. In Malta, however, the public deserves to know more about the circumstances that allowed a woman wanted in Italy since 2023 to leave the island on a commercial flight.

The Maltese authorities should therefore clarify whether the woman had been living in Malta, whether she held any form of local residence permit and whether an alert concerning her was accessible through the relevant European systems. They should also state whether they are cooperating with the Italian investigation and whether any local connections are being examined.
