Anti-Israel Petition Fails to Gain Strong Support in Malta

A European petition promoted in the current anti-Israel climate failed to gain strong support in Malta.

Figures now circulating online place Malta among the EU countries where the initiative attracted relatively weak backing compared to population size, despite the broad visibility given to the issue across European and Maltese media.

The result is significant because the petition emerged during months of intense coverage of the Gaza war, with much of Malta’s mainstream media taking a clearly critical line on Israel. Yet despite that environment, the campaign did not generate the level of mobilisation seen in several other EU states.

The figures do not amount to a scientific survey. But they do show one clear political fact: despite heavy publicity and a favourable media climate, the petition did not gain major traction in Malta.
