SILVAN AGIUS And HIS CONSULTANCY AEQUITASBRIDGE

by a Blog Reader

Two well-connected Maltese activists have launched a Brussels consultancy to preach diversity, equality and inclusion. They have appointed themselves co-directors, with no woman in sight.

Silvan Agius and Cyrus Engerer founded Aequitasbridge in 2025. The firm promises to bridge the gap between lofty equality policies and daily practice. Services include diversity training, policy design and EU navigation. Both men feature prominently as co-directors on the sleek website. They now stand to profit handsomely from the very agendas they once shaped at public expense.

This self-appointment stands in stark contrast to their earlier political venture. In late 2024, the pair helped form Partit Malta Progressiva, a new progressive party modelled on Emmanuel Macron’s La République En Marche. A core rule required two co-chairs — one man and one woman — to uphold gender parity. When no woman stepped forward for the unpaid post, the project stalled. Agius explained: “We don’t want to lead the party with two men, because we believe in gender parity.” The party went dormant. Yet for their own consultancy firm, this rigid principle vanished. The two men now pocket the proceeds without apology. They owe the public an explanation for this convenient U-turn.

Public records paint a troubling pattern for free-speech advocates. Silvan Agius played a central role in prosecuting Matthew Grech, an ex-gay Christian who shared his personal testimony of leaving homosexuality. Agius and fellow activists reported Grech for allegedly “advertising conversion practices” after a television interview. The case dragged on for years before Grech and two journalists were acquitted in March 2026. Agius, who helped draft Malta’s equality law, even presented himself in court as a “victim”. In another episode, Agius lost a defamation appeal against this blog, which accused him of hypocrisy. In the Court of Appeals, the judge confirmed that the comments protected opinion and noted that Agius himself had breached the equality law he created for the Maltese government by advertising what he perceived as conversion therapy himself.

Critics note that the apparent victims in the court cases were primarily gays or ex-gays who failed to conform or perform to Agius’s expectations. At a milder level, it resembles the treatment of Islamic apostasy: dissent is not tolerated, even within the community they claim to champion.

Editorial Note.

It was not my intention to publish this blog. I am not one to dwell on past events; I prefer to look towards the future. However, after watching Silvan Agius’s interview with MaltaToday, I changed my mind and decided to publish it.

It should be noted that Agius has not only dragged me to court but has also taken legal action against others for expressing their opinions. Agius appears to want only his views to be heard. I have no problem with that. What I do have a problem with is his apparent attempt to silence others’ views.

Incidentally, the law firm that assisted Agius in the case against me is closely linked to, and has supported, Dr Alex Borg’s bid to become the new leader of the PN.
