Male Suicide in Malta: Breaking the Silence on an Uncomfortable Truth

This site was the first to speak out and reveal the stunning reality in Malta about the high rate of suicide among men. For a long time, this reality was being kept hidden, perhaps because it did not fit comfortably with the gender politics that Europe and the populist left were promoting in Malta.

What this site stated was later confirmed to be true when official statistics showed that last year Malta recorded a record number of suicides. In total, there were 28 cases. What is particularly striking is that 25 of them were men.

I am now sharing this interview, which I strongly encourage my readers to listen to. In it, Dr Susie Bennett, a female researcher who specialises in male suicide, sheds light on a largely hidden reality. Bennett states that promotion and mental health awareness are good, but they are not enough. I would say that it has a minimal effect. The health professions need to reach out to these individuals rather than waiting for them to reach out.

What is also clear from the tweet below is that men who commit suicide are not illiterate, uneducated, or “toxic.” They are ordinary human beings, many of whom are highly literate, intelligent, and socially functional.

This challenges the simplified narrative often promoted in the West that explains social problems almost exclusively through the idea of a patriarchal society. The data and the lived experiences described in this interview show a far more complex and troubling reality, one that deserves serious and honest reflection.
