THE NATIONALIST PARTY MUST STAND FOR LIFE

by Young Voice

The Nationalist Party (PN) faces a critical moment. No matter who wins its leadership election, the new leader will allow PN parliamentarians a free vote on the Labour government’s push for euthanasia. This is a mistake. A free vote on traffic laws or taxes is one thing. But euthanasia? That’s a matter of life and death. If the PN won’t defend the sanctity of life, what does it stand for?

Historically, the Nationalists championed business interests, since capitalism drives prosperity. Yet, today, Labour has outdone them. Malta has become a capitalist free-for-all, especially in construction. Labour’s so-called socialism is dead, flushed away. The PN fought hard for EU membership, but the party has never secured more MEPs than Labour has. In the electorate’s eyes, Labour outperforms the PN on its own turf.

So, what sets the PN apart? If it fails to protect life from conception to the grave, nothing. Labour is corrupt, no doubt. But prominent Nationalists aren’t saints either. The PN demands the rule of law, yet some of its own make a public mockery of it through their personal lives. Without a firm stand on life, the PN is just Labour in disguise.

The Catholic Church has clear end-of-life teachings. It’s not as if Labour’s agenda has no counter. The PN could embrace these values, aligning with the Maltese people’s deeply held beliefs. Instead, it shrugs, letting MPs vote as they please. This isn’t leadership. It’s a cop-out. If the PN can’t defend life, the core of our existence, what’s its purpose?

Just days ago, this blog exposed Nationalist politicians who claim to follow Birgu’s St Lawrence but betray his martyrdom. They crucify Christians in court for rejecting a perverse sexual lifestyle. These politicians talk values but bow to polls like reeds in the wind. Where’s the leadership? Where’s the courage to fight for what’s right?

The PN must decide: stand for something or drift into irrelevance. Jesus had harsh words for the lukewarm, and the PN should take note. A party that won’t defend the weakest on their deathbed has no spine. It risks becoming a shadow of Labour, indistinguishable and irrelevant.

The leadership election is a chance to reset. The PN must reject the free-vote nonsense on euthanasia. It must uphold wise teachings and lead with conviction. Maltese voters deserve a party that fights for life, not one that sways with the breeze. If the PN can’t stand firm, it will deserve its electoral wilderness.

  1. What a jumble of ideas! I apologise for responding so bluntly, but many of your arguments seem misguided.

First and foremost, the Government has committed to a consultation process. Are you seriously suggesting that the PN would censor and shut down any discussion on controversial topics like euthanasia? Open debate is essential in a democratic society, and the Government has already indicated that Labour MPs will be granted a free vote on such matters. So what exactly is the issue here? Are you implying that your moral views should be imposed on those who hold different beliefs?

You claim that Labour socialism is dead, what an extraordinary statement! Let’s look at the facts: Labour has introduced free childcare, breakfast clubs, IVF services, and public transport. It has lowered tax bands, delivered substantial annual pension increases, safeguarded civil liberties, launched multiple housing schemes, subsidised utility bills, and supported employers during the COVID crisis. Does that sound like socialism is dead?

And finally, are you suggesting that the PN should become the official party of the Catholic Church and Christian values alone? If the PN were to follow such a narrow path, it would risk becoming irrelevant, retreating into a cul-de-sac and dragging itself back to medieval times.
