Attempted Escape at Mtahleb Facility Raises Questions

An attempted escape was reported today involving inmate Sheldon Micallef at the CoRRS facility in Mtahleb.
According to information available, Micallef allegedly attempted, or came close to, escaping from the Correctional, Rehabilitation and Reintegration Services (CoRRS) centre earlier today. The incident has once again drawn attention to security concerns at the facility.
This is not the first time Micallef has been involved in such an incident. In the recent past, he had also reportedly attempted to escape from CoRRS. On another occasion, he absconded while participating in a programme outside the facility. He was subsequently the subject of a search operation, and his case received media coverage, appearing in local newspapers.
These repeated incidents are raising concerns about internal procedures and supervision within the correctional system.
Observers have noted that similar episodes did not occur under the tenure of former Colonel Dalli, during whose leadership such security lapses were reportedly not witnessed. Critics argue that current management appears to allow situations to escalate, undermining discipline and institutional credibility.
Authorities have not yet released a detailed official statement regarding today’s incident.
