Lifestyle & Mobility Delivers Customised Wheelchair Honouring Malta’s Maritime Heritage

UK-based mobility specialist Lifestyle & Mobility has gone the extra mile to ensure a Maltese customer received a fully customised wheelchair reflecting his national heritage.

The customer, Luca, had requested a unique design to honour Malta’s maritime heritage. The bespoke wheelchair was tailored to his vision, combining functionality with a vibrant design celebrating Maltese identity.

A team from Lifestyle & Mobility personally delivered the customised wheelchair, underscoring the company’s commitment to personalised service and customer care. In a photo marking the handover, Luca is pictured proudly seated in his new wheelchair, holding the Maltese national flag.

The delivery highlights how mobility providers increasingly recognise the importance of individual expression and cultural identity in assistive technology. Rather than being seen as a purely medical device, Luca’s wheelchair demonstrates how design can also foster pride, confidence, and independence.

Lifestyle & Mobility’s efforts reflect a growing industry trend: tailoring products not only to meet practical mobility needs, but also to resonate with users’ personal stories and values.

Well done lads, outstanding effort.

Southern England-based retailer Lifestyle & Mobility recently made a 1,500 mile trip to Malta to hand over a customised active wheelchair and powered handbike to a loyal customer who had been struggling to find the products that he needed.

It was back in 2018 that the retailer first an unexpected request from a gentleman in Malta called Christian, who was looking for a prescriptive lightweight active wheelchair for his brother Luca.

Unfortunately Christian had found that that there no Maltese, Italian, or Spanish companies willing or able to help so he went further afield to the UK, and came across Lifestyle & Mobility.

Darren Macey, Business Development Manager at Lifestyle & Mobility, along with Lenny Bibby, Regional Complex Rehabilitation Manager at Lifestyle & Mobility, carried out the first video assessment with Luca.

Darren  commented: “An overseas prescriptive product deal takes a lot of time and effort, so why do it, when other companies wouldn’t? Because, given that we can, it wouldn’t have been in keeping with the Lifestyle & Mobility ethos to not do it. We believe that all people deserve the right mobility equipment for their needs wherever they may live. And, with the Maltese request, we acted on that belief.”

Luca recently took delivery of his third wheelchair from Lenny and Darren. Both Lenny and Darren, over the years, have established a rapport with Christian, Luca, and the rest of their family. Luca has remained a loyal customer of Lifestyle & Mobility as the retailer has continued to manage his needs.

For Luca’s latest wheelchair, he asked for a chair which reflected the maritime heritage of Malta. The island’s traditional wooden fishing boats have a distinct blue-and-yellow paint scheme. And, now so does Luca’s Quickie Xenon 2 wheelchair from Sunrise Medical, and his Empulse StreetJet powered handbike from RGK Wheelchairs.

In Darren’s words, “Luca and his family are always so grateful to us, and were really pleased to see us when we arrive in person – we are treated like members of the extended family!”

Lifestyle and Mobility was founded in 2002 by Ron Sverdloff and is now managed by Managing Director Aaron Sverdloff.
