WHY I READ THIS BLOG DAILY

(“Ta’ Kattoliċi, ta’ Latini, Maltin veri naħilfuħ”)

In Malta’s compact yet fiercely contested political arena, the media landscape has traditionally been shaped by the partisan leanings of the Nationalist Party and the Labour Party. However, a significant void has emerged in recent years, particularly for right-wing perspectives, a gap that the blog SimonMercieca.com has boldly stepped in to fill. This platform has become an essential voice in Maltese media, offering a conservative critique that the Nationalist Party’s own outlets should have provided but have failed to deliver, owing to the party’s philosophical drift. Meanwhile, the Labour Party, entrenched in government, squanders taxpayer money to benefit its inner circle, further underscoring the need for a principled alternative. Parallels with the UK’s Conservative and Labour parties reveal a shared crisis of identity, suggesting that only a revitalised right can bring about meaningful change.

The Nationalist Party, Malta’s traditional centre-right force, once inspired voters with its blend of Christian democratic values (“Ta’ Kattoliċi, ta’ Latini, Maltin veri naħilfuħ”), free-market policies, and national pride. Yet, in recent times, it has lost its ideological moorings, leaving its media outlets rudderless and uninspiring. Where these platforms should have been rallying conservative voters with a clear, robust vision, they have instead mirrored the party’s indecision, offering little more than lukewarm “Labour is no good”commentary. This philosophical bereavement has alienated its base, creating a vacuum in the media discourse. In contrast, SimonMercieca.com delivers unapologetic right-wing analysis that champions traditional values, fiscal responsibility, and national sovereignty. In doing so, it provides the kind of intellectual and moral clarity that countless Nationalist voters like me yearn for but no longer find within their party’s own channels.

On the other side of Malta’s political divide, the Labour Party, in power since 2013, has morphed into a soulless entity, prioritising power over principle. It’s the purveyor of corruption and cronyism, with taxpayer money funnelled into lucrative payments, and building permits, for Labour’s inner circle. This misuse of public resources has eroded trust in governance, highlighting the absence of a strong opposition to hold the government accountable. In the midst of all this, SimonMercieca.com offers a right-wing perspective that not only critiques Labour’s excesses but also articulates a vision of integrity and accountability.

This crisis of purpose is not unique to Malta. In the UK, the Conservative Party, once a bastion of Thatcherite ideals, has stumbled through scandals and ideological confusion, while Labour has wavered between centrism and radicalism, leaving voters disenchanted. Both Maltese and UK politics suffer from parties that have become hollow shells, more focused on short-term survival than long-term vision. In this context, this blog stands as a beacon, demonstrating the power of a principled right-wing stance. Only by embracing the values of individual liberty, economic discipline, and national identity can the right restore faith in democratic institutions. In Malta, as in the UK, meaningful change hinges on this resurgence. I include this blog among my daily readings because it offers viewpoints that my Nationalist Party is missing in its search for “fejn iħabbat il-polz.”
