The Nationalist Party’s Ideological Drift: Karl Stagno Navarra Rightly Describes It as a Betrayal of Its Conservative Roots

One may have differing opinions about Karl Stagno Navarra, but one cannot deny the validity of his remarks about the Nationalist Party. Stagno Navarra has just shared the following statement about the PN in Maltese, which I have translated into English:

“The Nationalist Party never ceases to surprise! They will try anything for votes! They would even go so far as to sell their mother, in the literal sense of the word.

After all their resistance to the historic reform introduced by the Labour-led Government, which decriminalised the use of cannabis, they now seek to reward or recognise those who supported the reform.

But they do not reward the Government!

Instead, they reward an activist from Moviment Graffiti—whose activism I admire—yet the PN has no shame. They grant this recognition to the activists because they need favours from Moviment Graffiti.

Obscene. Who do you think you’re fooling?”

In reality, Stagno Navarra articulates the sentiments of many Nationalists who have openly expressed their surprise at this recognition. Typically, such acknowledgements are granted by parties that embrace the woke ideology. A former PN deputy, Edwin Vassallo, did not mince his words, openly voicing his disapproval.

This is not a case of honouring an individual for their social contributions. Instead, it is a recognition—by a party that identifies as Christian—of an individual actively promoting the de-Christianisation of Malta. This is someone who has emerged as a key figure behind efforts to introduce abortion and gender ideology in Malta. These issues have led to legal action against specific individuals, including a priest.

Moreover, we are discussing a movement that has orchestrated personal attacks on Nationalists via social media simply for expressing conservative views. While Robert Louis Fenech has every right to his opinions and activism, for a conservative party to endorse such militancy suggests that it has lost its ideological bearings.
