A NEW CHAPTER IN BILATERAL RELATIONS: SOMERS FARKAS APPOINTED U.S. AMBASSADOR TO MALTA

by Correspondent

President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Somers Farkas as the United States Ambassador to Malta. This strategic decision comes at a pivotal time for the U.S.-Malta relationship, especially as concerns grow among Maltese over policy shifts and contentious embassy activities under the Biden administration.

Farkas, a Virginia native with a background in business, philanthropy, and public service, brings a pragmatic approach to diplomacy. Her appointment signals a commitment to addressing key issues and strengthening the bond between the two nations.

A PROVEN LEADER WITH DIVERSE EXPERIENCE

Somers Farkas has worn many hats throughout her career. She has consulted for both non-profit and for-profit organizations, fostering strategic relationships and spearheading brand-enhancing initiatives. Her work spans from developing international business, to demonstrating her versatility and innovative mindset.

Farkas’s dedication to public service is equally noteworthy. In 2017, she was appointed to the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, where she contributed to cultivating the next generation of American leaders. Her philanthropic efforts have raised millions for organizations such as the ASPCA, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the New York Women’s Foundation.

DEFENDING MALTESE AMERICANS AND RESTORING BALANCE

Maltese Americans residing on the island have faced increasing challenges, including attempts by local authorities to levy taxes on their American retirement and financial benefits, despite long-standing bilateral agreements between the two countries. These issues have created friction and uncertainty within the community.

Under the Biden administration, the U.S. Embassy in Malta was also criticized for promoting progressive causes, including identity politics and abortion-related initiatives, which many viewed as inconsistent with Malta’s family-oriented cultural values.

Farkas’s appointment is expected to mark a departure from theBiden policies. Guided by President Trump’s principles of promoting traditional values, she is poised to address the grievances while fostering mutual respect between the two nations.

A NEW ERA FOR U.S.-MALTA RELATIONS

Farkas’s philosophy reflects her upbringing and faith. She has said publicly that she draws inspiration from her mother’s teachings, emphasizing values such as integrity, generosity, and accountability. Her principles — “Always keep your promises,” “Stand for the flag, kneel for the fallen,” and “Dignity and gentleness should not be mistaken for weakness” — resonate with many who seek a steady and principled approach to diplomacy.

As Ambassador, Farkas is expected to focus on strengthening economic ties, promoting cultural exchange, and ensuring fair treatment for Maltese Americans. About three fourths of Maltese American voters cast their vote for Trump in the last presidential election, making them the largest demographic segment that voted for Trump. Her diverse background and commitment to public service position her as a capable and empathetic leader who can navigate the complexities of modern diplomacy where expectations are high.
