Pro Malta Christiana lambasts LABOUR MP Michael Farrugia’s proposals on ethically sensitive issues and describes them as another scandalous attack against Human life and Christian Civilisation in Malta

In a press release issued yesterday, 15 July 2024, Pro Malta Cristiana lambasted Labour MP Michael Farrugia for his proposals on ethically sensitive issues. Pro Malta Christiana described these proposals as a scandalous attack against human life and Christian civilisation in Malta.

In the Press release, Pro Malta Christiana said that “the Labour Party backbencher Dr Michael Farrugia has been reported (Malta Today, 10 July 2024) as stating that that parliament should set up ad hoc committees to discuss the ethically sensitive issues of the renting of wombs (or “surrogacy”), abortion, euthanasia and the adoption of frozen embryos.  Dr. Farrugia was cited as having said: ‘The time has come for Members of Parliament to listen to Maltese and foreign experts, and to the people, to formulate a policy in these areas’.

From hard experience, it does not require much intelligence to discern what these proposed initiatives will lead to full-blown legislation against the sanctity of human life of the unborn, the elderly who are frail and vulnerable and the continued treatment of human embryos as commodities.  All this, on top of the already damaging legislation passed over the past five years.  In 2022, the Maltese Society for Christian Civilisation – Pro Malta Christiana had warned the Maltese public against the then introduction law on embryo freezing, which has opened the way for infertile couples to financially rent a third party’s womb as if it were an incubator with a baby never knowing its real mother. 

These new amendments have made the procedure more barbaric and have given the so-called “Embryo Protection Authority” appointed by the current Government, the power to decide who is born and who remains frozen forever. In that same year (2022), this civic society of Catholic inspiration published a full-page paid manifesto in The Malta Independent on Sunday (15 November 2022), denouncing Prime Minister Robert Abela’s calls for a “debate” on abortion and euthanasia. That prophetic document stated: ‘Malta’s population has enough experience of what the calls for “debate” on morally sensitive issues have led to. Let’s debate the issue” in Malta means: Let’s introduce it across the board by stealth’. The same document also warned that Prime Minister Abela’s comments that year would ultimately open the door to abortion, as has occurred with the latest legislation agreed in parliament.

The parliamentary “ad hoc committees” being proposed by Dr Michael Farrugia are perfectly in line with this gradual strategy to impose the World Health Organisation(WHO) and the European Union’s (EU) anti-life agendas and will ultimately widen the scope for further aggression against human life in Malta.  Given Dr Farrugia’s favourable citation of the WHO’s and the EU’s current stance on these issues, most of the “experts” that will be summoned to testify in parliament will, in all probability, hail from those quarters that have always shown contempt for human life.

Pro Malta Christiana appeals to all pro-life movements and to Maltese Catholics to resist this latest proposed initiative through prayer and peaceful civic action in defence of life and what is left of Christian civilisation in our country.’
