Queering the Bible

By Romegas

This summer in Switzerland, the leader of the Peterskapelle, Meinrad Furrer and the queer-feminist activist Mentari Baumann have written what is touted to be the world’s first queer Bible

Meinrad Furrer stated that the project is not about writing “a new Bible” or imposing queer identities “into the old texts” but to retell and reinterpret “the biblical texts in such a way that they inspire queer people,”

As an example he posited how the biblical story of Joseph can be interpreted in a queer way.

According to Genesis, Joseph’s father Israel, also called Jacob, loves Joseph more than his other sons and makes him a gift of a “coat (or robe) of many colours,”. Queer interpreters now say that the Hebrew term “ketonat passim” does not refer to any colored coat or robe but a “floor-length, decorated sleeve dress”, as was worn by princesses in King David’s time – so according to them, Joseph who pranced about dressed as a princess perhaps identified himself more as Josephine and that it was his queer identity which was the real reason why he was later sold to Egypt by his brothers.

How they intend to queer passages such as Genesis 1:26-28  “God created man in his image; in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” or  Leviticus 18:22 – ““You shall not lie with a male as with a woman” remains unclear

Nonetheless, this project apparently has the full support of The Catholic Church of the City of Lucerne. The project was concluded ahead of the Central Switzerland ‘Pride March’ held on August 26th which the local Catholic Church officially attended along with the pro-LGBT “Alliance Equally Catholic” and the other two National Churches of Switzerland.

This is increasingly typical of the modern-day Catholic church, where while nothing from its authoritative teachings is formally changed, these are not only increasingly ignored but actively contravened without censure. All this is done under the guise of ‘pastoralism’ and ‘synodality’.

As a consequence, the Catholic church is in an existential crisis. The Bishops in Germany are in an open state of apostasy and defacto schism with membership plummeting terminally. In Brazil, where until the 1970s, 90% of Brazilians were Catholic, thanks to the Leftist Liberation Theology this has collapsed by 40% in a mere generation and now stands at just 51% with many of the believers converting to Protestantism. Elsewhere the Catholic Church is likewise losing out to other faiths for the very same reasons.

Orthodoxy in religion may not always save it, but it sure seems that progressivism always ruins it and It seems clearly evident to me, that whatever people of faith are looking for – it surely isn’t a queer religion with a queer bible masquerading as Catholicism.

Nonetheless, the liberals within the Church press on with their destructive agenda if not with the outright blessing of the Vatican, given the absolute lack of censure, then surely with a wink and a nod.
