THE EROSION OF FAITH IN MALTA AND THE DESCENT INTO PHILOSOPHICAL CHAOS

by a Blog Reader

In an age marked by rampant scepticism and the gradual erosion of traditional values, it is becoming increasingly evident to readers of this blogpost that Malta’s increasing departure from its Catholic roots has dire consequences that extend far beyond the confines of the church walls.

The once-venerated principles and virtues that underpinned our education are now under siege, as a vacuum left by the fading influence of Catholicism in the classroom, in the name of tolerance towards others with different faiths, is being shamelessly filled by new forces, from drag queens to fundamentalist gays that seek the dismantling of the Maltese family. They have no respect for our children and their values. They, as Gaby suggested, can take over whole classrooms without seeking the parents’ consent. The priest needs consent to teach one’s child; the drag queen does not. The priest can’t expose his soul without the parents’ consent; the drag queen can bare it all.

Concepts like “cancel culture” and the glorification of outrage culture thrive in this void, undermining any sense of empathy and understanding. The pursuit of power and Sodoma and Gomorrah’s pleasure become paramount, with little regard for the consequences on our fellow human beings.

Catholicism, for all its perceived flaws, provided a moral compass that guided our country toward compassion, empathy, and respect for human dignity. The teachings of Jesus Christ emphasized humility and the sanctity of life. They laid the groundwork for concepts like the rule of law, individual rights, and the pursuit of justice – ideas that formed the bedrock of our legal and ethical systems. Without the moral compass, authority is up for grabs. A disgruntled minister comes to blows with his prime minister. The leader of the opposition is shut out of his party’s club and his canvasser is scuttled to the operating theatre at the hospital. The leaders can only look with despair and either say nothing about it or, worse, pretend it didn’t happen.

With Catholicism’s decline comes the ascendancy of ideologies that embrace chaos and nihilism. The twentieth century taught us the horrific consequences of such thinking, as totalitarian regimes that rejected any form of transcendent morality wrought untold suffering on humanity that even reached our shores. The erosion of Catholicism leaves a void that can be exploited by those who seek to wield power without restraint or accountability, as in the cases of abortion and euthanasia. The marijuana laws were supposed to be strictly confined. Instead, the weed is smoked openly without restraint. Our laws are against abortion. Yet, we increasingly see flagrant violations through the advertising and marketing of abortifacient pills. There are no rules anymore for the forces of evil in our midst. They do whatever they want while the majority looks on in horror.

Critics might argue that secularism and humanism can serve as effective replacements for Catholicism. They cannot since they lack the depth and universality of a moral code rooted in divine teachings. Without a transcendent anchor, secularism is arbitrary and subject to the whims of erratic opinions.

The choice before us is not merely between faith and non-belief. It’s about acknowledging that the decline of Catholicism has far-reaching implications for the very soul of our society. It’s about realizing that an island without a moral foundation risks descending into chaos, division, and a loss of the values that have defined us for centuries.

  1. The church in Malta lost its moral ground in the 60s.
Go and tell it to the many Mons’s of the time.

    1. Not just Malta but Christendom as a whole. Particularly for Catholics, the rot first started with the Second Vatican Council in 1962, signaling the triumph of Modernism (Liberalism) over Tradition.

  2. No, Mr. Gerada, the Church didn’t lose its moral ground in the 60s. Why is it that everything has to come down to Labour in your eyes? Labour has been practicing, and continues to practice, interdiction on its wayward members and it’s going from strength to strength at the ballot box. The Church has suffered in its church attendance mostly this century. The 1960s were when you were a little boy and like most old men you still live in your childhood. Grow up for everybody’s sake and think with your own mind. Or else you’ll remain a carrier for others’ agenda. I pity you.

    1. The Kurja and not the Church had been in haemorrhage since 1927.

Nowadays the Kurja failed to modernise itself and mind you, those priests and from religious orders who tried to reach out the lost sheep were and are still treated badly by the Kurja establishment.

Noting also that the Kurja allow certain persons to work or are internal stakeholders who use the Church for political mileage.
