Thursday’s press conference showed us a Prime Minister who is panicking. It is obvious that Robert Abela is realizing that his days in politics are numbered.
I shall not comment on the clip hereunder taken from the Prime Minister’s address yesterday (Wednesday, July 19 2023) that is making the social media circuit. In this clip the Prime Minister says that it is the right of Jean Paul Sofia’s parents to request a public inquiry. Remember that Jean Paul Sofia’s mother had asked for a public inquiry, but Robert Abela’s government did not want to grant one. This led to massive protests from the public.
One has to note that a public inquiry can only be ordered by Government or better still by the Prime Minister. Thus, I cannot understand Robert Abela’s logic. The less he talks about this case the better it would be. What he should have done, as he already has done is admit that that he made a mistake and stop there. This conference was superfluous. In fact, with this conference he added salt to the open wound and even rubbed it in. The tragedy here is that it is the Prime Minister who is shooting himself in the foot.
What is clear is that for the first time we are seeing a Prime Minister who is panicking. No doubt, Robert Abela realizes that his days, as leader and Prime Minister, are numbered.

The Prime Minister and the Labour Parliamentary group were proven right in less than a week! If you just see what had happen yesterday within our law courts in connection with the accused in Miriam Pace’s case would have the answer. A public injury should follow after the magisterial inquiry is concluded and not the other way round. Robert Abela, Labour’s Parliamentary group and former PM Muscat were right in their stand!! Now, those who were behind the pressure for a public inquiry will zip their lips!!
I support the idea that a public inquiry should be held after the magisterial inquiry, however I was expecting the government to revise the proposed public inquiry when give the chance in parliament.
Parliament isn’t in the street and infront of cameras.
