A hidden abuse: should single mothers be allowed to continue hide the identity of the father to get social benefits?
By Marica Micallef
The Liberal media argues that Malta needs a less conservative society. The truth is that conservative ideology has been flushed down the toilet long ago. Many Maltese babies are born out of wedlock, allegedly to women and young girls who have been dumped by scoundrels and left to fend for their own. What does the left-leaning government do? Instead of leaving them to roll up their sleeves and see how they are going to face the music of their own stereo, because it takes two to tango, it supports them and provides them with housing.
To add insult to injury, the government gives more funds to single women with a child who jot down “father unknown.” Unless these women are prostitutes, blind, were drugged, raped or slept with more than one man in a day or so, then they surely know who the father is! Why doesn’t the government get these irresponsible, immature men to accept responsibility and pay maintenance without the women having to resort to court, after they deposit their sperm in a womb of a woman with whom they enjoyed having an orgasm but who do not want to enjoy fatherhood?
But if you are a couple who follows standards of morality and values, by working hard to own a home, organize and pay for your costly wedding, settle and have a child, then do not pretend anything from the left-leaning, progressive government. However, you are not by the mainstream media as a lurid conservative still living in the middle ages.
It is time for the government to stop this abuse, and single mothers should be asked to declare the father of their babies if they want to get social benefits. Moreover, single mothers should not be given preferential treatment over the rest of the honest, hard-working citizens. What I am attacking here is abuse and not those odd cases that would genuinely deserve help from the government. However, the government has created proper agencies that should be in a position to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Supporting single mothers should never be the government’s job. They should be supported by their family, friends, NGOs, religious institutions and the community in general. We must keep the government as small as possible as power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. No to nanny state, yes to personal responsibility.
