At present we have 400 homeless persons and 1300 individuals living in garages: Minister Galdes stop taking people for a ride

Whenever I listen to Minister Roderick Galdes speak, I am led to believe that everything is running smoothly and our country has no social housing problems. Last Friday 24th March 2023, I shuddered listening to Fr. Marcellino quote YMCA statistics wherein 400 persons have no roof over their head and 1300 individuals live in garages.

Faced with all this, what a Socialist government should be doing is to help the weak, the poor, the unfortunate helpless but this Government is seemingly indifferent. Roderick Galdes boasts and chatters on, but the problem is still there and has not yet been solved. Even if we wish to be honest with ourselves, we must admit the problem is increasing. It is not being tackled.

Just a year ago, work on the social housing building in Msida was in full swing, This because elections were beckoning and there was need to impress the voter. As soon as elections were over, works reverted to a snail’s pace and today a year on, nobody has yet occupied this building as can be seen for the photo below.

This goes to show how our Socialist government has lost its soul and its identity and instead has chosen to embark on a manic mission of greed and corruption. This faux Socialist Government has forgotten the homeless and has left this building uninhabited. Instead of investing in our Maltese brethren, Government is far more interested in investing our money with outsiders – like Steward – through a contract described by our Courts as fraudulent or by financing the purchase of weapons for Ukraine.

For this reason, the surveys are indicating that the population is losing faith in the Labour government. Government has lost its popularity in just one year after General Elections. Government has not only lost its Socialist essence but it is so immersed in its arrogance that it ignores everybody including its own people. Can one imagine our Government remembering and caring for those who are homeless?

But to make matters worse, it is not the first time that government has issued a press release stating that poverty in our country is decreasing!  Just ask Fr. Marcellino, who daily feeds the hungry and then you will be in touch with reality and you will assess just how these individuals are suffering. Those going to ask for a mouthful are not foreigners nor are they black, they are Maltese who cannot make ends meet because of the soaring cost of living.

This Government has to return to its roots, become Socialist once again and help the needy. It must finish the unfinished housing units and allocate them to the genuine homeless and not give them to core party supporters hailing from the district of Minister Galdes or to those who merely wish to change locality.

Ir is to be hoped that the Prime Minister dedicates some time to these issues and intervenes in order to ensure that the hardship of these people is alleviated Only with action will Robert Abela have proven to us that he is a true Socialist. Talking as he did a few days at the foot of our Freedom Monument is not good enough.

We shall wait and see!
