Malta signs a paper which is opposing Macron’s proposal to make changes in the Treaty of the European Union

Malta was in the international news but none of this appeared in the local media. According to The Telegraph, Malta was one of those EU countries which signed a paper against any changes in the treaty of admission to the European Union. French President Emmanuel Macron is using the French Presidency to put pressure to end the veto that each member state enjoys to oppose policies that may appear harmful to that member state in question. In other words, Macron is pushing forward the Federalist concept for Europe where decisions are taken by a simple majority. According to The Telegraph, the Eastern European Countries are all up in arms against this proposal. On the other hand, Macron is insisting that with such a proposal, the UK and Ukraine can be part of the European Union. Macron is insisting that his proposal will make it easier for those countries that share the same European values, but are not currently members of this union, to join. In other words, Macron is proposing a European Union made up of concentric circles. The UK can be part of the outer circle but there will be those countries that will be part of the inner circle. With this proposal, issues of foreign policies and sanctions will be decided by a simple majority and all the member states would have to adhere to what the majority would have dictated.

Always according to The Telegraph, this change in the treaty is not being shared by all member states to the extent that

A paper against beginning any treaty change was published and signed by Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, and Sweden. Hungary and the Netherlands are also against the idea of starting the painstaking negotiations.”

I fully concur and agree with the position that Malta is taking on this issue. The Maltese Government is doing the right thing to safeguard Malta’s interest and sovereignty.
