Italy’s Love Arch Fell on Valentine’s Day — Gozo’s on Women’s Day

Italy’s famous “love arch” collapsed on Valentine’s Day, reportedly due to severe weather. The story quickly gained international attention, not least because of the symbolism: a natural monument associated with romance disappearing on the very day the world celebrates love.
There is a certain irony in the way these celebrated natural “windows” seem to vanish on days loaded with meaning. The love arch in Italy is now gone, lost on a date dedicated to remembrance and affection.
Malta experienced a similar moment when the Azure Window at Dwejra, Gozo, collapsed on International Women’s Day. Once again, a landmark that had come to embody beauty and identity disappeared on a day meant for commemoration.
Such coincidences may be purely accidental, yet they underline how nature’s indifference often intersects sharply with human symbolism — leaving communities to confront loss at the very moment they are marking something else entirely.
