Mel Gibson Facing Assassination Threats After Casting Pro-Abortion Actress as the Virgin Mary

Mel Gibson is reportedly facing assassination threats from religious extremists and far-right groups after casting a Polish actress known for her pro-choice activism in the role of the Virgin Mary in his new film, The Resurrection of Christ.

The 69-year-old actor and director is currently filming the sequel to his $612 million global success, The Passion of the Christ, in Italy. However, the production has been swept into a political and ideological storm following Gibson’s decision to cast 46-year-old Kasia Smutniak as Mary. The choice has provoked intense outrage among conservative Christian circles across Europe, especially in Smutniak’s native Poland.

According to production insiders, the reaction has escalated far beyond online criticism and has developed into credible threats that security teams are taking extremely seriously.

One source close to the production said:

“There are people who believe Mel has crossed a line, and they are reacting in frightening ways. Some of the messages talk about punishing him or stopping the film by any means necessary.”

The source added that security around Gibson has been significantly strengthened due to both the volume and the tone of threats received.

“Security has been increased because of the level of anger directed at him,” the insider said.

Another individual involved in the production noted:

“Mel knew the casting would cause debate, but he did not expect the level of venom or the violent language he had seen.”

Controversy Fuelled by Polish Conservatives

The backlash intensified after conservative Polish activists publicised Smutniak’s vocal support for women’s rights movements. Critics in Poland have labelled her “unfit” to portray the mother of Jesus, pointing to her participation in protests against the country’s near-total abortion ban.

Despite the uproar, Gibson selected the Polish star for one of the central roles in The Resurrection of Christ, which continues the narrative where the original 2004 film left off. The sequel is currently in production across multiple Italian locations.

As tensions rise, the political and religious controversy surrounding the project shows no signs of slowing, raising concerns not only about the film’s production but also about the director’s personal safety.
