The Papal Tiara Will Not Return to the Coat of Arms, Despite Earlier Reports

Ansa reported that the papal tiara was initially expected to appear on the coat of arms of Pope Leo XIV, but this was later corrected: the tiara was replaced with the mitre. The mitre, significantly, evokes the figure of St Augustine, who, as a bishop, embodied episcopal authority. Regardless of whether the final emblem features the mitre or the tiara, the heraldic symbolism of the new pope unmistakably centres on the concept of auctoritas—authority—a principle at the heart of St Augustine’s thought.

This emphasis was visibly expressed during Pope Leo XIV’s first public appearance, in which he wore the traditional pontifical vestments, including the stole and the mozzetta, both long-standing symbols of papal authority. As an Augustinian, Leo XIV consciously draws from the theological legacy of St Augustine, for whom authority was the fulcrum of the Church, with the pope serving as its fullest institutional expression. It was for this reason that early reports speculated that the tiara might be reinstated, as a deliberate gesture affirming the centrality of authority.

In the end, however, Leo XIV adopted heraldic elements drawn from the coats of arms of both Benedict XVI and Francis. Regardless of the specific symbols chosen—whether mitre or tiara—the idea of authority remains the defining theme of this papacy.

  1. Let’s face facts….memo to all right wing radtrads & the like…we live in the 21st C the era of Vatican 2, of synodality, of collegiality, of ecumenism, of pluralism, etc et al. The papal tiara the sedia gestatoria, the old Latin Mass are long gone, a part of a questionable history that thankfully will not returning. The RC is a living breathing thing not a dead relic of the past. As such…in fact like all institutions …it is constantly growing, evolving, adjusting to the world in which it finds itself. That is the quality that keeps it relevant. Egalitarian principles are the hallmark of the post vatican 2 church. All attempts to go back in time (“restore tradition”) are misguided out of touch backwards in nature opposed to dialog with the 21st C & are bound to fail. Best to continue on the trajectory mapped out by synodality & pope francis & stop looking back to an imagined past that in truth was never very good.
