HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08) Spotted Transiting the Suez Canal on June 19, 2025
In a surprise development, the Royal Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08), has been sighted passing through the Suez Canal on the morning of June 19, 2025, marking an unannounced deployment that could signal a significant operational move in the Eastern Mediterranean, Red Sea, or Indo-Pacific regions.
Footage obtained and verified shows HMS Queen Elizabeth navigating the strategic waterway under escort, with her hull number R08 and distinctive twin-island design visible. This development is a surprise, as official updates from the UK Ministry of Defence had previously centred on HMS Prince of Wales (R09) leading Carrier Strike Group 25 (Operation Highmast) on a major Indo-Pacific mission.
The presence of Queen Elizabeth in the Suez Canal suggests one of the following:
- A separate and parallel deployment, possibly in support of operations in the Red Sea or Gulf region
- A mid-deployment rendezvous with HMS Prince of Wales to demonstrate combined carrier strike capability
- A strategic redeployment in response to recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East or Indian Ocean
This is not the first time HMS Queen Elizabeth has transited the canal. Her last major passage occurred in 2021, during Carrier Strike Group 21 when the vessel operated in the Indo-Pacific alongside allied navies. However, today’s transit was not announced in any recent MoD briefing or press release, indicating a possible deliberate decision to maintain operational secrecy.
Observers have noted that the Royal Navy has recently adopted a more agile and flexible posture in response to rising instability in the Red Sea, growing Chinese assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific, and continuing NATO commitments in the Mediterranean.
As of this writing, no official statement has been issued by the UK Ministry of Defence or Royal Navy confirming the carrier’s current mission or destination.
About HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08)
Commissioned in 2017, HMS Queen Elizabeth is the largest and most powerful warship ever built for the Royal Navy. She can carry up to 40 aircraft, including F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters and Merlin helicopters, and is a central component of the UK’s maritime power projection.

The Queen Liz class can carry a surge of 72 fighters and choppers and has a battle weight of 72 tons not 65. I thank you.
