The number of chromosomes is constant in any species. Clearly if sperm and ova each contained 46 chromosomes then at conception the fertilized egg would contain 92 chromosomes. To avoid this the formation of sperm (or ova) results a reduction division. This means that when the sperm with 23 chromosomes unites with the ovum also carrying 23 chromosomes the new individual again has 45 chromosomes.
