The victory of Valérie Pécresse: a first in French political history
Blog post by Dr. Hermann Farrugia
After a party election campaign where she so ably stood out, Valérie Pécresse Lady President of the Ile-de-France Region since 2015 emerged victorious at the Republican Congress held last week. She garnered a 61 percent majority in the second round vote involving near 150,000 Les Republicain party member-electors against very well respected Nice heavyweight Eric Ciotti. The Republicans finally chose their preferred candidate. For the first time in the history of the Fifth French Republic, a woman will represent the right-wing party in the April ’22 French presidential election. Valérie Pécresse is capable of communicating fluently in six languages (Russian, English, Spanish, German and Japanese, in addition to French).
