The Malta Independent on Friday 30 July 2021 ran an article entitled :
Caruana Galizia family accepts PM’s apology: Family will continue to fight for accountability
It is gracious and condescending on the part of the family to accept the PM’s apology. It is also reassuring to learn that the family ‘will continue to fight for accountability. However, there is a snag.
It seems that it does not remotely cross the mind of the Caruana Galizias to take a closer look at themselves and establish just how accountable their behaviour and actions have been so far ever since Daphne’s demise. Probably, it would be too much of a hassle for them to look closely for they know what they would find, and it would not be to their liking.
From Day One the family was allowed free rein. When, instead, the authorities should have immediately drawn them in as they do in any other murder case. It is important here to realize that there have been quite a few horrific cases of murdered women in Malta in recent years and yet the media has only given them cursory coverage. And the reason for this is that besides not being journalists, these poor victims were not related or married to two-bit penny lawyers. These victims were women who did not belong to what is now being identified – in our society – as people of the first tier.
As far as I am concerned, any form of such discrimination should never exist in a country that is based on democracy. But let’s return to the snag. How can the Caruana Galizia family, in all sincerity, claim to continue fighting for accountability when it does not know the meaning of the word accountability? Return to read the testimonies in the court sittings where they are involved, one will find the deceit and inconsistencies to which one adds that they have destroyed key evidence which they unitarily decided to destroy at the expense of the Daphne’s trial. How can one have repeatedly lied, taken the law into their own hands, destroyed key evidence, manipulate and hoodwink everybody claim that they will fight for accountability? Let’s not forget too that Daphne had not filed an income tax return for the last ten years prior to her tragic death. Yet the family still finds the energy and has the gall to patronise us Maltese in this charlatan fashion.
