An open email to the Maltese Commissioner for Children

Blog post by Marica Micallef

In this blog, I am copying an email that can be copied by parents or guardians to be sent to Ms. Pauline Miceli, the Maltese Commissioner for Children.  This email was being circulated on Facebook. All parents and guardians are invited to send it via email, on behalf of their children to

Dear Ms. Pauline Miceli

As a parent, I am sending you this email to ask you for your intervention against the latest Covid-19 measures involving children under 12 years of age. I am referring to the measure where children under 12 years of age who have vaccinated parents can stay without a mask outdoors from the 1st of July while the same bracket of children of non-vaccinated parents cannot stay without a mask outdoors.

So, on behalf of Article 5 of The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children, and I quote from your official government website: “Article 5:  Your family has the responsibility to help you learn how to exercise your rights and ensure that your rights are respected.”

I am bringing to your attention that this measure is discriminatory and unfair towards children of non-vaccinated parents.  Our children will be treated differently and have different rights based on their parents’ medical history.

This measure is in breach of and I quote from your official website

Article 1:  Everyone under 18 years of age has these rights.

Article 2:  All children are equal. There is no reason why children should be treated unfairly.

Article 4:  The government has a responsibility to make sure that your rights are protected.  They must help your family to protect your rights and create an environment where you can grow and reach your potential.

Article 19:  You have the right to be protected from being hurt and mistreated in body and mind.

This measure will expose children of non-vaccinated parents to:

  • Bullying due to the fact that they will be masked while other children of vaccinated parents won’t.
  • Expose them to risk of body and mind harm brought from bullying, brain damage from lack of oxygen while playing/running in the heat of summer-like heat strokes.
  • Expose them to a higher risk of bacterial infections.

It also shows that the government is not keeping to its responsibility to make sure that their rights are protected.

On behalf of your oath “To serve and protect the public” and your public position paid by our tax money and as a Maltese citizen and as a parent I am asking for your immediate action because the rights of our children have been breached.

Awaiting feedback

Thanking you in advance,
